Ci-dessous, nous pouvons voir une lettre partie de Rouen (74) le 1er mars 1862 arrivée à destination à Déville-lès-Rouen le lendemain. L'expéditeur n'avait pas affranchi la lettre, la Poste l'a donc taxée à l'aide d'un timbre-taxe carré.
L'emploi des timbres-taxe fut rendu obligatoire à partir du 1er juin 1859.
Pour les lettres d'origine locale, la taxation représentait le complément nécessaire pour amener la lettre au bon tarif d'affranchissement. En 1863, un coefficient de 1,5 est appliqué aux lettres d'origine locale (pour une lettre à 10 cts, le timbre-taxe était à 15 cts).
